Chapter 15
A Lost Cause
Befuddled, uneasy, and disconcerted, Cecilia threw herself on the olive-green sofa in her houseâs living room as soon as she had returned home. She remained lying still and seemingly stoic for quite a while, but, in her mind, a war was waging between several embattled thoughts. Staring on the white-painted ceiling, she contemplated.
What was Miss Felie saying? Why am I starting to believe her? Was she really right? Even if she is, does it even matter? Why do I feel unsettled?
Absentmindedly, she moved her legs and feet towards the direction of the kitchen, controlled her hand to grip the handle of the fridge and got a pitcher of water, then poured it in a glass, and forced her mouth to drink it until the glass was empty. She did all of these while wondering where her worry was stemming from. Her mind switched to another thought when it had dawned on her that her thirst had been quenched.
Miss Felie is just worried. She thinks Ruben is still mistreating me. She doesn't know. Maybe she is so distracted by my black eye that it is hard for her to believe that he is really changing. He hasn't hurt meânot unless I was to blame for it. Miss Felie doesn't understand.
She then opened the fridge again and bent her body to peek inside and stare at its contents. She forgot why she was doing this. For dinner, she remembered. There was virtually nothing fresh to cook, so she would just have to reheat some leftovers. There were plenty of them in there, anywayâfrom the kaldereta to the seafood they had had the night before. She closed the fridge and stood in front of it like a statue for several seconds while having an internal debate.
What if sheâs right? Did my husband do more to me than give me bruises and scars that I didn't ask for? Well, what if Miss Felie is right? What can I do? Should I do something anyhow?
She left that question hanging in her troubled thoughts as she grabbed the rice cooker pot, poured some measure of uncooked rice in it, headed to the kitchen sink, and washed the rice twice before putting the pot on the rice cooker. As she plugged it in its socket and turned it on, she pondered over something she thought was more important.
None of that matters now. Ruben is willing to change. If only, I can keep up doing things right. Thatâs it! I should just try to please him or help him in any way I could. Thatâs what he needs. After all, it has been working rather well. What Miss Felie said doesn't matter now. I donât care what she thinks. Okay, I admit that I wish I had known about it sooner, but I donât care now. The important thing is, things are changing.
Finally being able to control her concentration after being momentarily lost in her wild thoughts, she hurried upstairs, went into their bedroom, and
